Social Media on the Job Hunt: ETC Hosts LinkedIn Profile Workshop

On Wednesday, February 13th, the Eagle Technical Communicators (ETC) hosted a LinkedIn workshop to teach attendees the best practices for optimizing their LinkedIn profiles. This workshop focused on guiding attendees through building their profile content and emphasizing their skills and strengths.

Attendees were initially unsure of the quality of their LinkedIn profiles. "A LinkedIn profile is one of those things you start to worry about when you start looking for jobs," said grad student Jake VanderVaate.

Approximately ten people attended the event and received feedback from ETC members and several professors. "The importance of resumes is declining, but social media presence is increasing," said Adjunct Professor William Ordeman. He emphasized that attendees should consider their LinkedIn profiles as investments in their "professional personas."

Students logged into their LinkedIn profiles on their laptops or phones while ETC President Joseph Shortino distributed evaluation forms, partnered attendees together, and provided instructions for the workshop. Students, ETC members, and professors assessed each others profiles.

After discussing their assessments, ETC members and professors provided personalized feedback and advice. Professor Vincent Robles and Lecturer Meesha Thomas actively assessed how attendees presented their career goals and personalities.

As the event wound down, attendees reported feeling much more confident about their content and one attendee even declared herself a "LinkedIn profile master."

On Wednesday, February 27, ETC will host Mikayla Kim, UNT Tech Comm alumna and technical writer for Southwest Airlines, as she leads a free workshop on Microsoft Visio from 5-6:30pm in GAB 330D. Attendees will attend a short presentation and receive hands-on training.
