UNT Tech Comm Alumna Mikayla Kim Leads Microsoft Visio Workshop

On Wednesday, February 27th, several UNT Tech Comm students attended a workshop on Microsoft Visio, a widely-used diagramming and vector-graphics software tool.

Mikayla Kim

The workshop was led by UNT Tech Comm alumna Mikayla Kim, a technical writer for Southwest Airlines since 2017. She was hired at Southwest for an internship with the company before she completed a Bachelor of Arts in Tech Comm at UNT. As part of her job duties, Mikayla "creates and updates process workflows in Microsoft Visio to document critical procedures."

She began the workshop by demonstrating how Visio can be used to organize and manage projects and workflows. Following her explanation, students were asked to select and complete one of two exercises.

The first exercise required students to use the cross-functional flowchart template to display the steps of a hypothetical scenario involving a technical writer drafting a document for a subject-matter expert.

The second exercise required students to create a calendar of events and due dates for a hypothetical project where they were allowed to explore the capabilities of the software.

After half an hour of practice, Mikayla answered follow-up questions and gave advice on using Visio to enhance project management and workflow. She shared her attempts at both exercises and opinions on Visio and its templates.

WorkshopMikayla closed the workshop with advice for prospective students on workplace assertiveness.

"If you want a project at work, ask for it," she said.
