Ask the Pros: ETC hosts a meeting with UNT graduate Jessica Fisher

By: Michelle Nguyen

The Eagle Technical Communicators student organization (ETC) recently held an "Ask the Pros" event with Jessica Fisher, a professional technical writer and graduate of UNT's technical communication program. Jessica shared how she became interested in technical communication and how she began working as a technical writer in the oil and gas industry. She also shared plenty of practical advice for the 24 aspiring technical communicators in attendance.

Jessica was first introduced to technical communication in a business writing class she took Tarrant County College. After expressing her interest in the topic to the professor, the professor told her about tech comm at UNT. Jessica enrolled at UNT and graduated with a degree in professional and technical communication in 2016. She currently works for Pioneer Natural Resources Company in Las Colinas, Texas.

During the meeting, Jessica explained that tech writers do so much more than just "make things pretty." They must also be flexible, organized, and proactive. And while having expertise in every aspect of tech comm isn't necessary to have a successful career as a technical communicator, a familiarity with a range of tools can help prospective employees get their foot in the door

Jessica urged students to feel confident in their skills and abilities and to remember that they've taken the classes and learned the material. "You own this!" she said.
