On February 22, the Department of Technical Communication hosted the first Tech Comm Mentorship Showcase. During the event, tech comm students discussed their experiences in the new mentorship program, offered in partnership with the North Texas Lone Star Chapter of the Society for Technical Communication.

The program pairs students with tech comm professionals as mentors. At the showcase, tech comm majors Peyton Keene, Cordell Johnson, and Ashley Miller shared valuable insights they learned and explained why others should apply for the program.

The students welcomed the career advice they received from their mentors, and they emphasized how helpful it was to learn about available industry opportunities that align with their interests.

They also worked with their mentors to strengthen their resumes, LinkedIn profiles, and portfolio pieces. They practiced for job interviews and learned tips for using industry tools and workflows. Students who join the program receive an STC student membership and have access to workshops, webinars, and networking opportunities.

The program offers a chance to learn directly from mentors about the work they do and about their personal experiences as professional currently working in the field. It also helps students understand how their skills from the classroom translate into professional settings to set them up for success as soon as they enter the workplace.

The mentorship program is a great step for seniors transitioning into the professional world, students getting started in tech comm, or anyone looking to advance their tech comm career.
